Mega altar

Don’t miss the Day of the Dead mega altar at UNAM. This year, its location will be within CU.

Day of the Dead is just around the corner, and with it comes the traditional altars. One of the most anticipated is the Mega Altar created by the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), which is set up each year as part of the University’s Day of the Dead Festival.

Since 1997, UNAM‘s Mega Altar has been placed in different spaces every year, sometimes within Ciudad Universitaria — like at the Universum Museum or one of its faculties — and other times in iconic locations in Mexico City, such as the Historic Center.

In its 26th edition, the UNAM Mega Altar takes on a special significance. The University’s Day of the Dead Festival will focus on honoring the women who have made significant contributions to fields like science, the humanities, and the arts. This theme not only adds depth to the event but also serves as a platform for showcasing influential female figures from history and contemporary times.

So, you can expect some altars inspired by figures like Remedios Varo, Marie Curie, or Frida Kahlo.

UNAM is committed to environmental care, and for this occasion, the Mega Altar will use only recyclable, recycled, and non-polluting materials. At the same time, single-use plastics and one-time-use elements will not be allowed.

When and Where Will the UNAM Mega Altar 2023 Be?

The setup will take place on October 30th and 31st, so people can visit on November 1st and 2nd. This year, it will be held at the red track of the University Olympic Stadium within CU from 10 am to 9 pm, and the entrance will be through gate B.

During this event, participants, mainly UNAM students, often provide cultural presentations and dress up as “catríns” or “catrinas.” So, in addition to enjoying the altars, you may also have the chance to admire their talent in these characterizations.
